With UserWay Pro, site administrators can review, edit, and approve image alternative text (alt text) directly on their live website using the widget’s built-in Remediations manager.
What is Image Alt Text?
Alternative text (alt text) is a brief description added to an image’s HTML alt attribute: <img src="backpack.png" alt="Black leather everyday backpack with front zipper pocket">
Screen Readers: People who are blind or low-vision rely on screen readers to read the alt text aloud.
Fallback Display: If an image fails to load (due to poor network connection or a broken path), the alt text appears in its place.
Decorative Images: Images that do not convey essential information (such as abstract background patterns, divider lines, or purely ornamental graphics) should be marked as Decorative so assistive technologies know to bypass them.
How UserWay AI Handles Missing Alt Text
When the widget loads on your site, it scans for images missing valid descriptions and uses image-recognition AI to automatically generate contextual alt text.
How to Access Image Alts on Your Website
Navigate to your website where the UserWay Pro widget is installed.
Click the UserWay Accessibility Widget icon to open the menu.
Click Manage at the bottom of the widget panel and log in with your admin credentials.
Click View Remediations to open the options:
Click Image Alts from the list of remediation rules.
Understanding the Review Tabs
The Image Alts review screen organizes images into three dedicated tabs:
To Do: Displays images for which UserWay AI has already generated alt text. The alt text is applied automatically, so this section is used to review and refine it.
Remediated: Displays all images with active remediations—including AI suggestions you approved, custom descriptions you wrote, or images marked as decorative.
Existing: Displays images that already have descriptive alt text defined directly in your website's source code.
How to Review, Edit, and Save Image Alts
For each image card in the list, you can perform the following actions:
Locate on Page: Click the Locate button to scroll to and highlight the exact image on your live webpage.
Review or Edit Text: Click into the description field to accept the AI suggestion or enter your own custom text
Mark as Decorative: If the image is purely visual and conveys no critical information, toggle the Decorative switch on.
Approve / Save:
Click Approve (or Save) to immediately apply the description to the live image.
If marked as decorative, click Approve Decorative.
Revert: If you wish to remove your custom remediation and return the image to its original state, click Revert.
Tips for Writing Effective Alt Text
Be concise and clear: Describe the subject, the action, and the key visual details in one or two short sentences.
Include text shown in the image: When a banner or graphic contains visible text, repeat that text exactly in the description.
Focus on context: Write the description around the message the image communicates in that specific section of the page.
Keep the length short: Long alt descriptions slow down the reading experience, so keep the description brief and to the point.
