The Image Alts Dashboard helps you review images discovered on your website, understand their current alternative text (alt text) status, update image descriptions, and export image records for reporting and review.
Domain Selector
The Domain Selector allows you to switch between domains associated with your account.
⚠️ Important: Only websites with an active Pro subscription support Image Alt editing. Websites without an eligible subscription may display image information, but editing functionality may not be available.
Dashboard Categories
The dashboard provides an overview of all images discovered by the Image Alts feature for the selected website. The following categories are available:
Category | Description |
All Images | All images discovered by the Image Alts feature. |
Images with Alts | Images that already contain alternative text. |
Missing Alts | Images that currently do not have alternative text available. |
AI-Generated Alts | Images whose alternative text was automatically generated by AI. |
All Images
The All Images category represents all images discovered by the Image Alts feature for the selected website.
ℹ️ Note: The dashboard only displays images discovered from pages that visitors have accessed after the Image Alts feature became active on a website with a Pro subscription.
For example, if visitors browse your homepage, contact page, and services page after Image Alts is enabled, images detected on those pages may appear in the dashboard and contribute to the All Images count.
Images with Alts
The Images with Alts category represents images that already contain alternative text on the website.
Because these images already have an alt attribute, the AI remediation process typically does not generate a replacement description automatically.
You can still review and update the alt text directly from the dashboard instead of editing your website's source code.
Missing Alts
The Missing Alts category shows images that currently do not have alternative text available. An image may appear in this category for several reasons:
Possible Reason | Description |
Processing in Progress | The image is still being analyzed. |
Image Cannot Be Accessed | The image is unavailable for analysis. |
Image No Longer Exists | The image is no longer available at its detected location. |
Unsupported Content | The image is not supported for automatic alt-text generation. |
ℹ️ Note: A Missing Alt status does not always indicate a problem. Some images may simply require additional processing time.
AI-Generated Alts
The AI-Generated Alts category represents images whose alternative text was automatically generated by AI.
Information | Details |
Created Automatically | Yes |
Requires Approval | No |
Can Be Edited | Yes |
Recommended Review | Yes |
AI-generated descriptions do not require approval before they become available.
However, you should review generated descriptions and update them when necessary to ensure they accurately describe the image and its purpose.
💡 Tip: AI-generated descriptions are a great starting point, but the most effective alternative text depends on the image's purpose and how it is used on the page.
Viewing Image Site Location and Image File Location
The Image Alts Dashboard allows you to view both:
The page where the image was detected
The image file that was detected
Examples:
Page location
example.com/contact
Image file
example.com/images/team-photo.jpg
This information can help identify where an image appears on your website and which image file is being referenced.
Editing Alt Text
To edit an image description:
Sign in to your UserWay Dashboard at https://manage.userway.org/.
Click Image Alts in the left navigation menu, then choose the website you want to manage from the site dropdown menu.
Locate the image you want to review.
Review the existing alt text or AI-generated alt text for the image.
Update the alt text description as needed to accurately reflect the image's purpose and context.
Click Save to apply your changes.
⚠️ Important: Before saving, confirm that the description accurately represents the image and communicates any meaningful information it provides.
Marking Images as Decorative
Some images are used only for visual presentation and do not communicate meaningful content. Common decorative images include:
Decorative shapes or patterns
Background images
Visual dividers
Borders
Design elements
Images that repeat nearby text
To mark an image as decorative:
⚠️ Important: Only mark an image as decorative when users would not lose meaningful information if the image were ignored. Marking an image as decorative allows assistive technologies to ignore it, helping reduce unnecessary or repetitive screen-reader output.
Alt-Text Length Indicator
The colored bar below the alt-text field provides guidance about description length.
Status | Meaning |
🟢 | Recommended length |
🟠 | Acceptable length |
🔴 | Longer than recommended |
The colored bar evaluates description length only. It is not:
An accessibility score
An accuracy score
An AI-generation status
A human-approval indicator
A green description can still be inaccurate. A red description is longer than recommended, but that does not mean generation failed or saving is blocked.
When an Image Preview Cannot Be Loaded
In some cases, an image card may display: Can't load this image
This means the image was detected, but a preview could not be displayed in the dashboard. Possible causes include:
Possible Cause | Description |
Authentication Required | The image is protected behind a login. |
Temporary or Expired URL | The image URL is no longer valid. |
Hosting Restrictions | External access to the image is blocked. |
Page-Specific Access | The image can only be loaded from the original webpage. |
Image No Longer Available | The image has been removed or relocated. |

Why can't I see all images on my website?
The Image Alts feature does not function as a crawler or site scanner.
Images are discovered only when:
A page contains the UserWay widget
The website has an eligible subscription
Visitors access the page after the feature becomes active
Pages that have never been visited after activation may not have their images detected.
What happens if I cancel my Pro subscription or remove the widget?
What happens if I cancel my Pro subscription or remove the widget?
The Image Alts feature does not modify your website's source code. Instead, remediations are applied through UserWay functionality when the widget is active.
If the subscription is downgraded or the widget is removed, alt-text remediations applied through the feature will no longer be available to website visitors.
