How to Prevent Content from Being Translated or Override Live Translations

Learn how to exclude website content from Live Site Translation or override automatic translations with custom translations.

If a translation provided by the UserWay Live Site Translation add-on does not match your needs, you can keep specific content untranslated or request your preferred wording.

What would you like to do?

Option

Keep names or other content in the original language.

Replace an automated translation with wording you prefer.

Exclude Content from Live Site Translation

To keep specific content unchanged in every language, add the data-uw-ignore-translate="true" attribute to its HTML element.

For example:

<p data-uw-ignore-translate="true">
This paragraph will not be translated. </p>

This option is useful for company names, product names, brand names, personal names, and other content that should remain unchanged across languages.

If you do not manage your website’s code, share these instructions with your website administrator or developer.

Override a Live Site Translation

If an automated translation is incorrect or does not match your preferred wording, follow these steps to request a replacement:

  1. Identify the words or phrases you would like translated differently.

  2. In Page URL, enter the full address of the page containing the text. Enter * if the content appears on every page, such as text in your website footer.

  3. In Translation to Override, enter the original text you want to provide a custom translation for.

  4. In Correction, enter your preferred replacement translation exactly as you want visitors to see it.

  5. In Language, enter the applicable two-letter ISO 639 language code.

  6. Complete Selector1 and Selector2 when selectors are needed to identify the specific website element. For example, if identical text appears in several places but only one occurrence should receive the override, selectors help identify that location. Your website administrator or developer can help with these fields.

  7. Save the completed spreadsheet. Email the spreadsheet to desk@support.userway.org. Include the website URL or URLs where you would like the changes applied.

Turnaround Time

Translation override requests typically take one to two business days for validation, processing, and implementation. Processing time may vary depending on the size of the submitted file.

Expected Result

Content marked with data-uw-ignore-translate="true" remains in its original language.

Approved translation overrides replace the automated translation with your preferred wording on the specified pages and in the selected languages.
